Homemade Baby Wipes

Happy Wednesday everyone!! I am so happy that you are reading this awesome post! So, you all heard about the whole Huggies Wipes issue right? I mean who hasn’t but in case you are like, “What the heck is this lady talking about???”, I will fill you in!

I was perusing Facebook one evening before bed as I usually do and I came across a post about how a woman found something in her wipes! I watched the video and she found what she thought might be shards of glass or fiber glass. Anyways, I pulled out my Huggies wipes to inspect them and there were the sparkly crystals that she showed, I also noticed the texture was really rough. Tatum has also had a weird rash on his bottom lately and I have no idea where it came from, but I think it ties back to the wipes we have been using. Anyways, I really don’t know if it is glass or fiberglass, or what and I don’t know that that is what has caused his butt rash. What I do know is that it has chemicals in it that I don’t want going on my baby’s body. I make him organic baby food so that he is not being exposed to pesticides and chemicals in food, so why am I using these chemicals that I have no idea how they work or react on his body? So I decided that I will make my baby’s wipes so that I know what is going into them and so that I have control!

So I set out to Pinterest to find out how!! So the basic thing I have found in common with all of the different recipes is 1 cup of water to 1 Tablespoon of a moisturizer and 1 Tablespoon of soap! It is so much easier than I thought it would be and it took like 10 minutes to make! Plus I know what is going into his wipes!

So here is what you will need:

  • 1 roll of paper towels (I use Viva brand because they are so soft, like cloth but a lot of people like Bounty)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Baby Wash (I used his Johnson’s Lavender Baby Wash, but I will opt for something all natural next time)
  • 1 Tablespoon Organic Coconut Oil (or you can use baby lotion)
  • 1 Cup of Hot water (so that the coconut oil will melt)
  • A container to store them in (a coffee can works great)

How to make them:

  1. Cut the roll of paper towels in half. Use a super sharp knife. I used serrated knife and it created a huge mess plus it made the wipes jagged on one side.
  2. Remove the cardboard tube out of the middle of each half.
  3. Mix the coconut oil and baby wash into the hut water. It is 1T Coconut Oil, 1T Baby Wash, 1 Cup Hot water per half.
  4. Pour half the mixture in the bottom of your storage container. Put one half of the roll of paper towels in the container and pour the rest of the mixture over the top of it. Let them sit for a few hours so that the mixture can disperse evenly!

So easy right? And I know what is going onto his body! Did you also know that coconut oil helps with diaper rash? Double duty in his wipes (no pun intended)!! WOW!!

DISCLAIMER: I am only going off of what I saw in the video and what I had seen and noticed with my own eyes. I am not looking for negative attention or looking to sue Huggies or any other brand for that matter. This is my opinion about the wipes and it has not been proven what exactly is wrong with the wipes. This video just brought something to my attention about most brands of disposable wipes and I am no longer using Huggies wipes because I don’t know what the weird rough, shiny bits are and they can’t really explain them either.

Tatum’s Birth Story

Hey everyone! Sorry I have not posted in FOREVER! I am now the busy mom of a 7 year old and a 4 month old! I am going to tell you all about Tatum’s birth so be prepared for some TMI!

So, in July of 2014, I found out I was going to have another baby! I know this should have been an exciting time, but I was a hysterical mess. I was on birth control and we didn’t think we were ready for another kid! I was freaking out for weeks! When I finally accepted the fact that I was going to be a new mommy for the 1st time in 7 years, I was actually kind of excited!

On September 13th, I thought it was going to be just like any other day. We woke up and my back was hurting really bad and I just felt off. We went to the Farmer’s Market and ran a few other errands. It was really hard for me to walk even though I was only 12 weeks along. It was just really unusual. As soon as we got home from our errands, I felt a big gush run down my legs. I ran to the bathroom and was pouring blood. Hubby rushed me to the ER and I just knew I was miscarrying. This baby I had just started to become attached to and love was gone. I was a mess. When we got to the ER, they admitted me immediately and got an ultrasound machine in there. There was a heartbeat and the baby was moving a lot! My little miracle baby was alive. It turns out I had a subchorionic hemorrhage which is where the placenta tries to detach from the uterus. They usually resolve on their own!

I bled for 7 weeks and did not understand how I could bleed for that long while my baby was continuing to grow and do well. On October 30th, we had our gender ultrasound and they were going to make sure that my hemorrhage resolved. We took Izzy with us to confirm that she was getting a sister just like she asked for. We all wanted another girl. We picked out the name Annabelle Lee if it was a girl and Tatum Michael for the slim chance that it was a boy. As soon as the ultrasound began, the technician announced, “Congratulations! It’s a boy!”. WHAT?? A boy? No, it has to be a girl. Are you sure?? What are we going to do with a boy? I know it seems selfish to be upset about getting a boy, but I got over it once I started looking up cute boy stuff on Pinterest!

Everything went fine the rest of my pregnancy until about 31 weeks. I started throwing up. Like not keeping water or anything down and having contractions that were about 20 minutes apart. I went to the doctor after 3 days of suffering. They told me that I was in early labor and I was dilated to a 1 1/2 and 50% effaced. Plus his head was super low. She once again put me on bedrest for a week. She wanted me to at least get to 32 weeks and she began to see me every week. I was not progressing fast, so they told me to go back to normal activity and to call them if my contractions get any closer together. The next week, my contractions got to 10 minutes apart and stayed like that for 3 weeks with lots of progression. I was miserable and just wanted it to be over.

The last week of my pregnancy, my contractions were 5 minutes apart and I was dilated to 4 and 100% effaced and stayed like that the entire week. I was in the hospital every night begging for some kind of relief. Wishing that someone would put me out of my misery. They doctor said that if I did not have him by my due date on March 22, 2015, they would induce me on the 24th. I tried walking, pineapple, chocolate, raspberry leaf tea, EVERYTHING. Nothing worked. The 22nd came and went and so did the 23rd so on the 24th we trudged down to the hospital to be induced.

On March 24th, we woke up at 5:00am so that I could eat breakfast and drink a cup of coffee. I was so tired, but really excited and ready to get labor going. At 6:00am, we arrived at the Hospital and settled into our birthing suite. I was so nervous about labor because I knew what to expect. At 6:30am they hooked me up to monitors and started an IV and had to watch me for an hour before they could start the induction. I was still having those lovely 5 minute contractions. Ughhh. Anyways, at 7:50am they started my pitocin drip and broke my water. Here we go, no turning back now. The contractions started picking up and it hurt worse than I remembered. With Izzy, labor was only 2 hours so the doctor ordered my epidural 1st thing when they broke my water. At about 9:30am when I was dilated to a 6, I got my pain relieving epidural. For a split second, I didn’t know what hurt worse, the epidural needle or the contractions. Then the meds kicked in and I felt NOTHING. For the 1st time in 5 weeks, I got real sleep. It was amazing and at that point, I didn’t care if labor lasted all day!

Then, I felt a weird pressure so I called my nurse in and she checked me. She said that I was complete and it was time to have a baby. She made the call and nurses started pouring into my room with excited faces. Then came my doctor who brought in a big mirror (at my request) so that I could watch my son make his debut into this world! I had my hubby and my parents in the room with me! A contraction came and my doctor instructed me to push. I pushed through 4 or 5 contractions as my family and nurses cheered me on! I started to get tired and questioned if I could really do this. I saw his head crown and got excited to see the rest of my baby. Another contraction came and I delivered his head. He had so much hair. The final contraction came that delivered his body and there he was. Tatum Michael was born at 11:21am. He was 7 lbs 2 oz and 21 inches long and he was perfect. He was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. They cleaned him off and gave him to me for an hour of skin on skin bonding. They let the rest of my family come in. Izzy came running in, jumped on my bed and said “Momma, I love him! He is perfect! I want to hold him!” She got to hold him after our skin on skin and even got to hold him before his daddy. He is now 4 months old and is still such a joy in our lives. I could not have had a better experience, even though it was a bit crazy.

Baby Talk: My Hospital Packing List

Wow! I only have 6 weeks or less until my little Tatum gets here! I am nervous, excited, and miserable all at the same time! I just can’t believe how fast my pregnancy has flown by! We had our baby shower this weekend and it was an amazing way to welcome our little cowboy! We got some amazing gifts and had a fun time with family and friends!

Anyways, to keep my mind busy while carrying around a huge child who is putting some serious strain on my back and knees, I have been working on packing the hospital bags this week. I have also been working on getting stuff together for Izzy’s Big Sister Bag! She is so excited to get a baby brother and can’t wait to meet him!

It has been 7 years since I have had a little baby in the house or had to prepare for one, so it is almost like I am a brand new mom again. I can still remember a few things, like the fact that the hospital gives you tons of stuff for the baby while you are there and to never forget the bobby pillow (or your own pillow).

Here is what is going in each bag!!

Mommy’s Bag

  • Hospital Gown- I am thinking about getting my own hospital gown made because I am wanting the birth photographed!
  • 1 Nursing Gown
  • 2 pair of comfy clothes for daytime- I am buying a couple of pairs of Victoria’s Secret sweats (they are baggy and wonderful) and VS t-shirts (since they are pretty low cut to make for easy feedings). Comfort and looseness is key after having a baby!
  • 2 nursing bras- Izzy used to throw up right in my bra after feedings as a newborn, so I am coming prepared!
  • 3 Pair of socks- hospitals are cold, bring comfy socks!
  • House Shoes
  • Robe
  • Pillow and blanket- They never provide enough blankets in the rooms and I would rather sleep on my cloud pillow than a flattened out pillow.
  • Chapstick
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Bodywash
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Face Wash
  • Moisturizer
  • Make Up- you may or may not feel like putting some on, but I am bringing just some CC Cream, blush, and mascara so that I can look a little more human!
  • Going Home Outfit for Mom- I am just going to use the comfy VS outfits! If they are dirty, it won’t really matter since I am going straight from the hospital to the house!
  • Postpartum Girdle- Look them up and you will be in love! They help you heal faster, and get skinnier again! WOOHOO!!
  • Granny Panties- The hospital usually gives you a few pair. I would probably just go to walmart and buy a few pairs as well. Make sure they are cheap since you don’t want to ruin any good panties!
  • Lotion- I just bring baby lotion so that you can kill 2 birds with one stone!
  • Hair Ties
  • Boppy Pillow
  • Camera & charger or batteries
  • Cell Phone & charger (for both you a hubby)
  • Laptop or tablet and charger- you are going to get bored! Trust me- when the baby is asleep and all your guests are gone, you will think you are going to die of boredom, so you wake the baby up and it screams for 2 hours non-stop and you really wish you would have let the baby sleep. Bring it so this scenario does not happen!
  • Chewing gum
  • Nursing Pads
  • Germ Ex
  • Birth Plan
  • Flat Iron- just in case you decide you want to fix up a little!
  • Blow Dryer- No one likes running around with wet hair.
  • Contact lens supplies

Baby’s Bag

  • 2-3 Onesies and sleepers
  • Going Home Outfit
  • Blankets
  • Picture taking outfit- our hospital takes really good pictures, take advantage of it!
  • 2-3 hats
  • 3-5 socks- you will only make it home with 1 pair, trust me.
  • 3-5 mitts- once again, you take in 5 pair and 1 pair comes home with you.
  • Nook pacifier- Izzy hated the soothies one and would spit is across the room. Bring a variety because most hospitals only carry one kind!
  • Baby wash- I like to bring my own just for the heck of it!
  • Special toy- Izzy was given a little pink bear by a good friend and 7 years later still has that sweet little bear (even though it is more of a brownish tan color than pink now). We will have a special toy for Tatum to grow up with also!

Daddy’s Bag

  • 1-2 pair of Pajamas
  • 2-3 pair of underwear
  • 2-3 pair of socks
  • 2-3 changes of clothes
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • deodorant
  • razor
  • house shoes
  • pillow
  • snacks- just because you can’t eat doesn’t mean he doesn’t need to. Someone has to have some energy for the grand finale!

Sibling Overnight Bag

Izzy will be staying with her Mamaw and Papaw, but she will still need clothes and stuff!

  • 2-3 Pair of Clothes
  • 2-3 pair of socks
  • 2-3 pair of underwear
  • 1-2 pair of pajamas
  • house shoes
  • robe
  • GoodNights (one for each night)
  • Books
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • hair brush
  • hair bows
  • hair tie

Big Sis/ Big Bro Bag

Of course she is going to want to spend time with us at the hospital, so we are making her a special big sister bag filled with lots of goodies!!

  • Big Sister T-Shirt
  • Pacifier- to help with Tatum
  • A few toys- for her to play with
  • A baby toy- to help play with baby boy
  • Snacks
  • A Capri Sun
  • Coloring book and crayons

Stocking up for baby: Bath and Body Works

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I can’t believe 2014 is almost over! WOW, where did the time go? I am in my 3rd trimester now and am hardcore nesting. Not just your normal kind of nesting. No, like ripping up and redoing the floors in each room and scrubbing the bathtub with a toothbrush kind of nesting. I have decided to take what little energy I have left and work on stocking up on supplies for the house and the baby. I am also taking advantage of the after Christmas sales at each store! I am starting with Bath and Body Works and will work my way around to the other stores.

Bath and Body Works

  • PocketBac Hand Sanitizers: 5 for $5: These are amazing for a million different reasons! 1. They go great in my purse, diaper bag, my daughter’s backpack, everywhere. 2. They are $1 each and make great baby shower favors and prizes! 3. They make great nurse gifts!
  • Foaming Hand Soap: $3 each: I was given some of these as a Christmas gift and fell in love (as did my hubby). These also have a million reasons to buy them! I can use them at the house and the hospital for people to wash their hands before cuddling our sweet boy. We use them a lot at the house and I won’t want to go out to buy soap if we run out with the increased traffic in our house. They also make good game prizes for the baby shower.
  • Lotion: Up to 65% off: These are great for moisturizing after all the hand washing! They have some scents as low as $3 each.
